The City of Nashville gave us our first fire truck (Engine 11-2), then the City of Hendersonville gave us two fire trucks and a rescue truck. Sumner County gave us the use of the old school building, then we borrowed $20,000 to purchase our gear and start training. Over the years, we have had many fundraisers and have bought some very nice equipment to help keep the community protected.

Who We Are
     We are volunteers which means that when we are not volunteering for the Fire Department, some of us work and some of us are retired. Some of us have been with the department just a short time. Some of us have been here a long time. but, when we are serving you, we work hard and we work as a team. And because we volunteer, our community not only received excellent public safety services, but it avoids the cost of hiring firefighters.

     During the past few years, Shackle Island has worked hard to lower our ISO Insurance Rating from a Class 9. To split rating of Class 7 for areas with a fire hydrant within 1000 feet of their home and a Class 9 for all other areas. Although we are very pleased with this rating, we are continuing to work to improve that rating so that the community will benefit by paying lower insurance costs.
